The electrifying visit of internet sensation Ishowspeed briefly focused the world’s eyes on Ghana’s pop culture pulse. Now, a homegrown institution is crafting a far more enduring legacy, aiming to plant Ghana’s flag firmly on the global carnival map. The National Federation of Masqueraders and Fancy Dress of Ghana (NFMFD-GH), through a strategic rebirth and bold international vision, is preparing to export one of the nation’s most dynamic art forms to the world’s most famous streets.
This journey begins with a conscious break from the past. The federation shed its former identity as the Gold Coast Masqueraders and Fancy-Dress Association, a name that tethered it to a colonial era. According to Nii Tettey Oku, National President of the NFMFD-GH, the new identity reflects a more unified and forward-looking Ghana. “We needed a name that reflected a sovereign, unified, and ambitious Ghana,” he explains. “National Federation speaks to our structure and seriousness. It tells the world we are the central, organized hub for an entire industry, ready for professional engagement on any stage.”
Critical to this outward push is a powerful digital presence through the professional website www.nfmfdgh.org. The platform serves as the federation’s global portfolio, connecting Ghana’s masquerade communities to international festival organizers and cultural institutions.
“Our website is our passport,” explains Abena Serwaa, the Federation’s International Relations Director. “It allows carnival organizers in France, Canada, or anywhere in the world to instantly witness the power, diversity, and professionalism of our craft. It moves us from being a local cultural treasure to a globally bookable cultural asset.”
While the federation’s performances have long been celebrated domestically, its sights are now firmly set on the global carnival circuit. Preparations are underway to bring Ghanaian masquerade and fancy-dress performances to internationally recognized festivals such as the Nice Carnival in France, the Dominican Republic Carnival, Boston Carnival in the United States, Toronto and Montreal Carnivals in Canada, and the legendary Notting Hill Carnival in London.
“We are not simply waiting for invitations,” Nii Oku emphasizes. “We are proactively building the case for Ghana’s inclusion by studying these festivals, understanding their themes, and preparing presentations that demonstrate how our art form can enrich their global celebrations.”
The federation’s international ambition is closely connected to a broader national vision. Plans are underway to establish a landmark National Festival of Masquerades and Fancy Dress in Ghana, which would bring together masquerade groups from across the country in a large-scale cultural celebration.
Experts believe such a festival could significantly strengthen Ghana’s creative economy. According to cultural economist Prof. Akosua Adomako, a well-organized national carnival could generate employment for costume designers, musicians, performers, caterers, tour guides, security personnel, and event planners while also boosting tourism and regional development.
A national festival inspired by international carnival standards would stimulate economic activity and create sustainable income opportunities for masquerade practitioners across the country.
The federation’s strategy therefore combines global ambition with strong local development. By expanding international exposure while building structured cultural events at home, the NFMFD-GH aims to transform masquerade into a vibrant cultural industry that contributes meaningfully to Ghana’s tourism, creative arts sector, and national identity.
As preparations continue, the federation remains focused on showcasing Ghana’s masquerade heritage as a living, dynamic art form capable of captivating global audiences. The world’s carnival stage is calling, and Ghana’s masqueraders are preparing to answer with colour, rhythm, creativity, and cultural pride.
