The National Federation of Masqueraders and Fancy Dress Ghana (NFMFD-GH) has officially announced the launch of the Black Star Carnival, a national cultural initiative aimed at transforming Ghana’s rich masquerade and fancy dress traditions into a structured tourism and creative economy platform.

The announcement follows a strategic engagement with media stakeholders as part of efforts to introduce the vision of the carnival to the public and international cultural partners.

The Black Star Carnival is designed as a three-tier national celebration beginning with district-level carnivals, progressing to regional showcases, and culminating in a grand national carnival at the iconic Black Star Square in Accra.

According to the Federation, the initiative will unify Ghana’s diverse masquerade traditions under one coordinated national calendar, creating opportunities for cultural promotion, tourism development, and economic growth.

The Federation noted that Ghana’s masquerade culture, widely celebrated in communities such as Winneba, Sekondi-Takoradi, Elmina, Swedru, Tema, and parts of Accra, has long been a vibrant cultural expression that combines music, choreography, costume artistry, and storytelling.

Through the Black Star Carnival initiative, these traditions will be elevated into a structured national event capable of attracting tourists, international carnival networks, and cultural investors.

The Federation further indicated that an international delegation from the global carnival community will soon visit Ghana to support the development of the carnival structure and provide technical guidance.

The delegation will include renowned carnival experts from the World Carnival Commission and other global carnival organisations who will collaborate with Ghanaian cultural leaders to ensure the Black Star Carnival meets international festival standards while preserving the authenticity of Ghanaian masquerade traditions.

Speaking on behalf of the Federation, Dr Benjamin Oduro Arhin Jnr explained that the vision of the carnival is to transform masquerade from a seasonal community celebration into a sustainable creative industry.

“The Black Star Carnival is about building a national platform that will showcase Ghana’s cultural heritage to the world while creating economic opportunities for performers, costume designers, musicians, and cultural entrepreneurs,” he said.

The initiative is also expected to stimulate economic activity within the broader cultural value chain, including hospitality services, transportation, event management, media production, and tourism services.

The Federation is working in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and other national stakeholders to ensure the successful rollout of the carnival.

Plans are also underway to engage policymakers, traditional authorities, tourism operators, and private sector partners through a national policy dialogue aimed at shaping the long-term sustainability of the Black Star Carnival initiative.

The Federation believes that with strong national support and international collaboration, the Black Star Carnival will position Ghana as a leading cultural tourism destination in Africa.

The inaugural edition of the carnival is expected to commence later this year, marking a new chapter in the growth of Ghana’s masquerade and fancy dress heritage.
